With its futuristic design and distinctive silhouette, the Oriental Pearl Tower remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in Shanghai’s vibrant Pudong district. Its unique appearance, combined with advanced vertical transportation systems, gives visitors the feeling of embarking on a journey into the future.
The structure is composed of eleven steel spheres of varying sizes arranged along three massive supporting columns. Three angled pillars at the base provide additional structural stability. After sunset, the tower comes alive with dazzling LED displays and colorful lighting effects, creating a striking visual centerpiece against Shanghai’s famous skyline.
Every year, approximately 2.8 million people visit the Oriental Pearl Tower to experience its many attractions. Beyond its observation decks, the complex offers a revolving restaurant, retail areas, hotel accommodations, and even entertainment facilities such as an indoor roller coaster, making it one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations.
The tower’s futuristic theme is reflected in the names given to its various sections. The highest observation area is known as the Space Module, while the lower observation level is called Space City. The five smaller spheres that house hotel facilities collectively form the Space Hotel, reinforcing the tower’s vision of a space-inspired experience.
Visitors heading to Space City, located about 90 meters (295 feet) above ground, travel in a circular glass elevator manufactured by Otis. Moving at a moderate speed of 2.5 meters per second, the elevator allows guests to enjoy panoramic views during the ascent.
When the tower first opened, it introduced China’s first double-deck elevator system. Developed by Otis, this innovative technology enables more passengers to be transported while requiring fewer elevator shafts, maximizing the efficient use of interior space.
To further improve visitor flow, additional elevators have been installed over the years. As part of a recent modernization initiative, two existing single-deck elevators are being upgraded to double-deck models. Once completed, the enhancement is expected to increase passenger-handling capacity by nearly 30 percent, providing a smoother and more efficient experience for visitors.
